Because things like this now exist (Huff Post) - President Donald Trump on Wednesday said the purpose of Vice President JD Vance’s trip to Greenland is to reinforce the idea that the U.S. has to acquire the semi-autonomous Danish territory, warning that Americans will “go as far as we have to go” to get control of the island.
In an interview with Vince Coglianese, Trump said a U.S. delegation was traveling to the territory this week “to let them know that we need Greenland for international safety and security.” “We need it, we have to have it,” Trump said. “It’s a island that from a defensive posture and even offensive posture is something we need, especially with the world the way it is.”
“I hate to put it that way, but we’re gonna have to have it,” he continued. Asked if he thinks the Greenlandic public would be on board with his plans, Trump said he wasn’t sure. “I don’t know,” he said. “I don’t think they’re un-eager, but I think that we have to do it and we have to convince them.”
A recent poll shows the overwhelming majority of the people of Greenland oppose joining the U.S. This is not stopping Trump, who separately told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday that the U.S. “will go as far as we have to go” to get control of Greenland.
We've all, I think, at least at some point in our lives been conned into doing something, paying something, signing something, hailing something, or dismissing something that we should not have. The solution is to take it as what modern parents call "a teaching moment" and move on. But it's hard sometimes. I am totally skeptical these days of just about anything coming from the official mouth of the US government, such as it is, but I spend far too much time checking in with various sources, trying to get a balanced sense of what's really going on. And what's really going on is so unbalanced that most of the time I feel like Joseph K in Kafka-land. The solution? Probably to gather a group of friends together and make something delicious to share. That brings you back so quickly to solidarity, to humanity. Wish I'd been there for that meal!
The Castle? I had no idea Kafka was also an artist. The word for company or community is com panis in Latin. There is no more time for teaching moments. Carefully trained individuals, especially adherents of RFK Jr are being employed to tell us to chill, relax, detoxify. This is classic fascist warfare. Create a problem. Claim media is biased against the truths they try to tell to insulate us from reality. Enact dramatic undemocratic destructive actions like firing tens of thousands of health care workers, pull back 12 billion dollars in fu ding from all 50 states for nutrition counseling and services, cut health benefits from almost a million veterans all while planning a constitutional convention to grant power to a unitary executive. This is worse than Perón, and as violent as Stalin. Who will save the day? Who will protect us? If we allow them to continue to dismantle all checks and balances, threaten the judiciary, enrich themselves unregulated, threaten lawyers, threaten entire sectors of the service sector - they will gladly offer us the solution of big brother in the form of Republican names Trump. The military will be ordered to suppress dissent, trodding on millions of starving people. The National Guard has already been called out. Now is not the time to huddle in fear, getting temporary succor.

Love this.
Thanks!
I've started a chat, too, for this Substack.

So do I wish you'd been here. And yes the best thing is to engage with friends over food and talk about NOT the USA but almost anything else.... 🧡🧡
